Jan. 13 updates

* Another fantastic piece from FP's Marc Lynch about the US press' editorial silence on Tunisie.
* Exactly where does France stand on this 'Jasmine Revolution?' Time reports that their position is mostly neutral, but silently supportive of Ben Ali. Yesterday, several sources were reporting that France was actually offering the Tunisian government military equipment! Today, France is condemning the 'disproportionate violence' of the government. It's hard to tell exactly where the French are coming from, other than perhaps they're trying to bandwagon to the side of the 'winners'
* Even Tunisia's ambassadors admit the roots of these problems are real (Bloomberg).
* The ineffectualness of the U.N. is on full display in this headline: "UN rights boss urges Tunisia to probe deaths and torture". I'm sure Ben Ali will get RIGHT on that.
* Supposedly Ben Ali's getting back on TV tonight to make another address. Note to aides: Please make sure phone is unplugged!
* I heard this rumor last night and dismissed it for lack of evidence. Serves me right that the NYT today reports that one of the Trabelsi gang had their Hammemet mansion burned down.
* The professor killed in Douz yesterday has now been identified as a Tunisian-French dual citizen. He was an IT professor. Another person holding dual Swiss-Tunisian citizenship was shot and killed in Dar Chaabane.
* All sporting events have been cancelled, and a handful of EU countries are issuing travel warnings.
